Remotivation's Use in Home Health Care

Research and experience has shown that remotivation use by staff and family caregivers in the delivery of home care can increase the patient's motivation to comply with doctor's orders, nursing plans of care and the family's expectations for self care, such as performing activities of daily living.

It can also increase the patient’s willingness to take medications and perform prescribed treatments.

Unlike in residential facilities and senior citizen centers where groups can easily be formed, remotivation is performed in individual sessions with patients or with the patient and a small group consisting of the patients spouse and/or live in family caregivers.

Remotivation in this setting models a climate of acceptance and appreciation, objective discussion of concrete topics and the everyday work of the world and community activities.  It reduces stress and anxiety levels in the home, focuses attention on positive, healthy strengths rather than weakness, problems and diseases.

It enhances patient education in the home and provides ongoing psychosocial support and nurturing.
