 Accessible Housing Resource Center

Your support is needed today to continue
our efforts and grow the AHRC.

The Accessible Housing Resource Center will have a home in
New Circle Vistas, with the Training Suite. This model unit will offer state-of-the-art accessibility features and will be available for seminars and training.

New goals for the AHRC
In December 2009, the MAHO Board of Trustees established priorities for the Accessible Housing Resource Center, including providing online accessibility information, developing a physical location for the AHRC, and advocacy and outreach to decision makers. Read more about these and other priorities here.

What is the Accessible Housing Resource Center?
The Accessible Housing Resource Center (AHRC) provides information and referral on accessibility and housing, provides educational programs, and advocates with government and community groups to increase accessibility in housing. It is designed to be flexible so that MAHO can respond to opportunities to help meet the housing needs of people with disabilities.

Education
Over 25 years of developing and operating accessible housing has given us the experience with which to provide extensive public education on visitability, and accessible design, and universal design in housing. This includes seminars, presentations, and technical advice. In addition to speaking at conferences and to organizations throughout the state, we often hold our own accessible housing seminars.

Advocacy
MAHO advocates collaboratively and individually with government, developers, housing agencies, etc. to ensure that housing for people with mobility disabilities is properly addressed. Executive Director Steve Hansler recently served on the Ohio Housing Finance Agency’s committee to develop the state housing plan with 25 other housing leaders from all over the state and was the chair of the accessible housing sub-committee.

MAHO Board members, staff, and tenants celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act on July 26, 2010 in downtown Cleveland. Circle Vistas tenant Kim Voss is featured in this story on the anniversary by WEWS Channel 5.

Information and referral
People call MAHO with a variety of questions about disability issues. MAHO’s expertise and community contacts allow appropriate referrals depending on their individual circumstances. Useful resources include
MAHO's Service List, Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless' Street Card, and United Way's 211 First Call for Help service in Cuyahoga, Lake, and Lorain Counties.

Collaboration
MAHO works with many community, housing, and disability organizations. Successful collaborations have resulted in new fully accessible homes, increased access to rent subsidies, the development of the
www.housingcleveland.org database of accessible and affordable housing, and much more.
For more information on the AHRC, please contact Executive Director Steve Hansler at 216.231.7221 or info@mahohio.org.
