When I 'm asked to do an event that has to do with breast cancer, it's hard to say "no". My mother passed away in January of 2008 after battling breast cancer twice before her third bout which invaded her spine with tumors and her liver too. IT beat her. My anger rises as I type those words. IT beat her. IT is cancer. IT should not win and I only wish that no other families have to go through seeing someone they love so much suffer anymore. The pain and sadness from the end of her life lingers and it's been hard for me to look at a picture of her without getting upset.
Lately I find myself smiling more when I think about her. She was such a funny person. I always thought I got my sense of humor from my Dad, but I am starting to realize it is from her. She remained upbeat about her treatment most of the time and would never want to worry the boys (I have an older and younger brother). To say she was caring is not enough! When I found she was terminal, she actually comforted me. How? Here she is in the face of death and she's making ME feel better.
We did Relays for Life in the western suburbs and one year she was too sick to be there, so I made a picture montage of the event for her to see. They were so much fun! A celebration of life! She was so full of life and that's why I am mad at cancer. I want to see headway made for a cure so that others don't have to suffer anymore.
Whenever I do an event fighting breast cancer like the Care4 Breast Cancer walk this October, I think of my mom and smile. I want to hug anyone ever affected and tell them not to give up. Don't let IT win. It's too important that you are here as a girlfriend, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
See you in October.
I'll be the guy with a name tag that pays tribute to
- Anne Christine - my mom.
