OVERVIEW
BASICS OF MEDIATION
Community Boards designed this accessible and practical training program for anyone interested in learning effective mediation and communication skills—for both personal and professional use. BASICS is also suitable for trained mediators wishing to enhance their skills. Training participants receive training manuals, supplemental handouts, and a certificate of completion.

BASICS is a comprehensive 40-hour training, offered as an intensive workshop, delivered over two consecutive weekends. What distinguishes BASICS
from other Bay Area trainings is its ongoing practicum for our graduates to refine their skills and develop their own conflict resolution styles.

Here are just a few examples of the types of disputes you can expect to mediate:  Sample Mediations

BASICS is a dynamic combination of lectures, presentations, group discussions and team activities, interactive exercises and role-play practices. Our trainers are a diverse group, each with areas of expertise. Participants learn critical skills essential for effective mediation, including:

Effective communication and active listening skills
Conflict theory and management
Stages of mediated problem solving
Balancing power
Managing a negotiation
Cultural and gender issues in mediation
Dealing with strong emotions
Breaking impasse
De-escalating anger
Drafting agreements that work

BASICS OF MEDIATION is ideal for:
Human resources staff
Staff managers & supervisors
Law enforcement professionals
Property & building managers
Real estate professionals
Social service & mental health providers
Legal & paralegal professionals
SF residents wishing to become volunteer mediators with Community Boards

TESTIMONIALS
"I received a lot of relevant and important pieces of information and how to apply them as a mediator. In the middle of one discussion, I suddenly realized that the technique we were discussing would be a perfect one to use with a co-worker I had issues with. The next day I tried it and it worked! Though things at work still aren’t perfect, they’re vastly improved."

“My experience as a mediator has been truly transformative for me personally.  I’ve developed practical communication skills, and experienced first-hand the power of empathy to heal and repair relationships.  Plus, I’ve gotten the added benefit of working with other mediators, learning from them and sharing with them.”
