Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

 What is PCIT?

PCIT is a specialized therapy approach designed for young children (ages 3-7) with disruptive behavior disorders and their parents.  It emphasizes improving the quality of the parent-child relationship by changing parent-child interaction patterns.  In PCIT, the parents are taught specific skills for strengthening the parent-child relationship, while increasing their child's positive behaviors and decreasing negative behaviors.

PCIT is an evidence-based treatment.  Numerous studies have found that children who complete this program have significant long-term improvements in their behavior.

Who is Treated by PCIT?

Children referred to PCIT present disruptive behavior patterns, such as oppositional and defiant behaviors, tantrums, inattentive and/or overactive behaviors, and aggressive behaviors.

How Does PCIT Work?

In PCIT, the therapist works with the child and parent together.  Parents are taught specific skills during the two phases of the program:  Child-Directed Interaction, similar to play therapy for relationship enhancement, and Parent-Directed Interaction, for discipline and behavior management.  During sessions, the therapist actively coaches the parent in using these skills with their child.

PCIT is short-term but not time-limited.  On average, 12-14 weekly sessions are needed for successful completion of the program.
