In 2008, local children's author Diana Tuorto released two middle-grade novels told from a horse's point of view. Proceeds have gone on to benefit various animal rescues and handicapped riding centers.
Luck of the Draw ($15) is the story of an unsuccessful racehorse searching for his life's purpose, and Janie's New Legs ($12) chronicles a special friendship between a paralyzed girl and a pony saved from neglect. Ellen Hasenecz Calvert resides in her adopted home state of Arizona. Born in New Jersey, Ellen considered herself a "Joisy" girl until 1988 when she fell in love with the fragile beauty of the Southwest. Pilgrim is her first book.
