Genealogy Seminar - January 14, 2012
The Clearwater Aging Well Center will host a Saturday, Jan. 14 seminar at 10 a.m. led by Pinellas Genealogy Society President Peter Summers. Summers will discuss how to access ancestry information from the 1940 census that is scheduled for release in April 2012.
Federal privacy laws prohibit census information from becoming public until it has been on record for 72 years. In 2012, the 1940 Census data will become available for the first time.
“It’s a little like opening a time capsule,” said Aging Well Center Manager Kerry Marsalek of the class that is one of a series offered monthly at the Aging Well Center. “I think this will be our most exciting class yet.”
The class is free and open to the public. It will cover how the 1940 census was conducted and how to search the records through available indices. Pre-registration for the class is recommended.
To register, please call (727) 724-3070. Additional information about this and other classes offered at the Aging Well Center is available online at www.myclearwater.com/agingwell.

The Surface Design Guild was founded in the early 90’s by a group of eight women who wanted to share their knowledge and learn from each other. That small group became what is known today as the Surface Design Guild and has grown to a membership of well over 100 members. Many of whom have had their art recognized both nationally and internationally. Yet as a group, they are still are committed to their original values of supporting each other’s artistic creativity and sharing knowledge. They are also dedicated to promoting awareness of surface design by offering educational activities in their community

A display case has been placed in the MSB lobby that now houses a gift of samurai armor from the city of Nagano, Japan in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Sister Cities relationship between Nagano and Clearwater. The armor is a replica of that worn by Sanada Yukimura during the Warring States Era in the late 16th and early 17th century. Red suits of armor are known as “aka-zonae”, and wearing such a conspicuous color on the battlefield conveyed the soldier’s preparedness to fight with dignity and honor.
In giving the city of Clearwater this honored gift, Shoichi Washizawa, Mayor of Nagano stated “In presenting this suit of armor, it is my sincere hope that the people of Clearwater will develop a deeper affinity for the culture, art, and history of Japan, and that the friendship of our two cities will continue for eternity.”
For questions related to the armor or the Sister Cities program, please contact the Cultural Affairs Division at 562-4837.
